He obtained his Medical Doctorate (MD) in 1975 and acquired post-graduate training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology in 1979 and 1980 respectively from the University of Manitoba. Dr. Minuk is active in both laboratory and clinical based research. In the laboratory his work has focused on the expression of genes encoding for hepatocyte membrane receptors that regulate transmembrane electrical potentials and thereby, cell growth and function. His work in this area has lead to important discoveries regarding hepatic regeneration and hepatocellular carcinoma. He has also studied the effects of light ethanol consumption on hepatocyte injury, function and proliferative activity in experimental models of liver disease. Funding for his research has been provided from the Medical Research Council of Canada (MRC) and Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) as well as the Canadian Liver Foundation, Manitoba Medical Services Foundation and the Health Sciences Centre Research Foundation.

Dr. Minuk’s clinical research activities have largely been in the area of viral hepatitis where he has studied the epidemiology, natural history and socioeconomic impact of viral hepatitis in the Canadian Aboriginal populations. He has also contributed at various levels to contract research involving antiviral therapies for patients with chronic hepatitis B and C infections. Finally, he has served as the principle investigator on studies that involve the investigation and treatment of hepatic encephalopathy, fluid retention problems, portal hypertensive bleeding and hepatocellular carcinoma.

In addition to having published in excess of 200 peer reviewed papers and book chapters relating to acute and chronic liver disease, Dr. Minuk has served as President of the Canadian Association for the Study of Liver Disease and is a recipient of Her Majesty’s Golden Jubilee Medal for contributions to the understanding and treatment of liver disease in Canada.
