Manitoba reaches 50K milestone

September 16, 2020 - Manitoba has just reached a milestone! As of September 15, 2020, Manitoba’s online organ and tissue donor registry now holds the donation decisions of 50,000 Manitobans. In its first year, signupforlife.ca gained nearly 8,000 registrations and the number has been climbing ever higher since its launch in April 2012.

This year marks 50 years of organ donation and kidney transplantation in Manitoba and reaching 50K registrations is a very fitting way to highlight 50 years of care, healing and hope. In November 1969, the team at the Winnipeg General Hospital (now HSC Winnipeg) successfully performed the province’s first renal transplant. Over the last 50 years, the Adult and Pediatric Kidney Transplant Programs have performed nearly 1,800 kidney transplants, including more than 600 living kidney donor transplants since 1971.

If organ and tissue donation is important to you, talk with your family and register online using signupforlife.ca. Registration takes two minutes and requires three pieces of information – name, birthdate and the nine digit number on your Manitoba Health card.
